Your air conditioner is a major expenditure when you have to replace it. Discover five ways you can easily extend your AC’s lifespan and get the most from that investment.

1. Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Start by changing your air filter routinely to allow air to flow through the system without restriction. Plan to check your filter monthly, knowing that the common 1- and 2-inch filter will need changing every 30 to 90 days.

2. Get Routine AC Maintenance

Your system needs routine maintenance to keep it operating at its peak efficiency, which reduces its operational strain. This maintenance includes a deep cleaning, testing, adjustments, and tightening of electrical connections and mounting hardware.

3. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clean and Clear

It’s as critical for your outdoor unit to circulate air as it is for your indoor unit. This allows the system to vent the heat the refrigerant absorbs from inside your home. Gently clean the outside of the unit regularly to keep dust and pollen off. Keep grass, weeds, branches, and shrubs trimmed back a minimum of 2 feet around your unit and 5 feet above it.

4. Leverage Thermostat Programs

Your digital thermostat likely has programs that allow you to adjust the temperature throughout the day. Raising the temperature while you’re home allows the thermostat to take a break when no one is home to enjoy the cool air. This reduces not only energy consumption but also the strain and wear on the system during those hours.

5. Keep Your Vents Open and Clear

In order for cool air to move around your home as your AC runs, you need to keep your supply vents open and clear, even in rooms you don’t commonly use. Make sure to give each vent at least a 2-inch clearance above and around it to allow air to circulate effectively.
