How Much Filtration Does an Air Purifier Provide?
Many air purification systems will have at least two layers of mechanical filtration. There will be a prefilter to trap the largest particles and preserve the more expensive media. Some systems will have a MERV-rated pleated filter for the primary particulate filtration. Beyond the MERV scale, there are HEPA filters, which can trap over 99% of particles.
In addition to mechanical filtration, air purifiers will often have absorptive filtration. Manufacturers will commonly use activated carbon for that purpose. This manufactured form of carbon provides excellent odor control. It also absorbs gases and airborne chemicals.
An in-duct ultraviolet (UV) light will neutralize over 99% of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. You have the option of adding a UV light alongside your air purifier. Experts generally recommend keeping these purification methods separate. That’s because UV light is more effective with the slower air movement outside the air purifier.
